New year symbolizes the efflux of Time! The old order must
change yielding place to new. Many years have elapsed and this year too will go
after twelvemonths! Time and tide waits for no man, Ages have passed,
generations have gone, civilizations have disappeared in the sweep of time. It
is a natural law that Time swallows up everything in its reign. Adi Sankara
said,” Dina yaminyou sayam prathaha sisira vasanthou punarayataha”—day and
night, evening and morning, autumn and spring come again and again! It is a
cycle that never ends! The first year of the Hindu calendar is ‘Prabhava’
meaning birth or creation. The last year of the sixty is called ‘Akshaya’ ---
that has no end! New year is an occasion for festivity when people come
together and celebrate at home, put on new clothes and have grand feasts with
delicacies! People want to be cheerful as the belief is that you will be happy
throughout the year if you are happy on the New Year day.
It is
customary for people to be anxious about their future in the new year.
Almost every TV channel forecasts the results of the New year for the
twelve zodiac signs in astrology! Even nation’s future is predicted on the New
year’s day. The planetary influences at the time of the beginning of the New
year have a considerable impact on the nation! The almanac analyses various
aspects and speaks of a planetary cabinet with a King, in charge of the nation,
a Prime Minister and other planets as ministers with different portfolios! Weather,
economy, market fluctuations, welfare of people, government, politics and other
branches are looked after by the major seven planets! If these planets are in
good positions and have beneficial aspects from other planets, the nation
prospers. Otherwise there will be trouble and turmoil,
It is a
tribute to our ancient astronomers and astrologers that they could predict
precisely the eclipses that occur in a year and whether they will be visible or
not. It is a fact that the terrible floods that devastated Chennai city were
predicted by an almanac or panchangam last year! It was clearly stated that in the month of November, Chennai would see
the worst floods in its history! What is this
‘Panchangam?’It is a combination
of the five important parts which one should consider before starting a major
project, wedding, upanayanam, building a house or land or any other work. What are the five
parts, Pancha + anga? They are 1 Tithi—the
day of the lunar month (waxing or waning” 2 Vara—the day of the week 3
Nakshatra or star of the day 4 yoga and 5 karana. Any activity has to be
undertaken looking into these five
aspects for success
India is
a land of unity in diversity! It has assimilated various civilizations and
cultures! It has diverse faiths, innumerable habits and customs, and many
languages. As such different parts of India celebrate different days as the new
year’s day! Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka follow the lunar calendar and have the
same new year’s day as UGADI. In Tamilnadu they follow the transit of the
Sun—Sauramana which invariably falls on the 14th of April. In north
India New Year is celebrated as Gudipadwa! There is hope and expectation for
all during the New year. This being the Election year people and political
parties are excited about the results. Various parties have come together in
alliance to try their luck in forming the governments in Tamilnadu Assam, west
Bengal and other States! Media is busy in giving out their assessment and there
is a neck to neck fight between the contesting parties! Whether political
parties accept it or not, the new year
and the planetary combinations have a decided impact on the results of
the elections! What is in the offing, this new year, for our nation? Will it reduce corruption? What will be the fate of the Congress Party? Will the BJP begin its account in Tamilnadu? Will Modi succeed in his efforts to bring in sweeping reforms? What will be our relationship with Pakistan, China, and America? Not only these but many more depend upon the planetary influences that would impact the Election results! Will Amma come back to power or the DMK ? That is a million dollar question!!
