REFLECTIONS ON PRANAVA

Pranava or Omkara is the Primordial Sound! It is declared as the Absolute Brahman or Supreme Reality! According to the Upanishads “On ityekaaksharam Brahma”! All sounds, it is believed, have emanated from this original Sound! It is a very holy and sacred sound. Pranava is a combination of three important  letters, A, U, M. The first letter A stands for Vishnu. The sounds included in the word Vishnu indicate the letter A in AUM. The Lord has declared already that He is A among the letters! “Akaraha Vishnu vachakaha”. In other words, the letter A stands for Vishnu. Thus placed at the first stage of Pranava,  Maha Vishnu protects the entire world. It is rare quality of Vishnu to protect everyone in all places and at every time! The next letter is 'U'. This letter represents  Mahalakshmi! In Chandogya Upanishads they sing about' UD, which represents Mahalakshmi herself! She the presiding deity of  the letter 'U'. Another meaning is that the letter 'U’ actually belongs to letter 'A'. It stresses that the letter 'U' can never belong to any other letter. After the two letters ‘A' and 'U' that stand for Vishnu and Mahalakshmi, the third letter 'M' stands for Manas or mind that represents intelligence!

Who is it that has intelligence? In Vedantic parlance it is Jivatma or the Individual Soul! He not only has intelligence but is intelligence itself similar to the sun radiating light rays and at the same time the center of heat and light. There is another proof to establish that the letter ‘M'  represents Jivatma. We notice the important tatwas namely Prakriti, Mahat, and Ahankara or Ego. From these three tatwas emerged “ Pancha tanmatras”. From these came the “,Panchabhutas” or the Five Elements!  From them the “Karmendryas”5, Jnanendryas 5 and above all ‘Manas' came in to being! Altogether they are twenty four in number! Apart from all these and the twenty fifth entity is the ' Jivatma'!  Entirely different from the twenty fifth, the twenty sixth entity is the “Paramatma”! That is why the famous Nammazwar says,  “Yennilum varum” in one of his pasurams. We have to think of the Lord in our mind. According to Adi Sankara the power of a material does not expect the mind of the other person. Fire injures the child as well as the adult. It doesn’t cool itself for the child! Its power and nature is to burn!

The letter A includes both Narayanaa and Mahalakshmi! Wherever we speak of Narayana there is Mahalakshmi also!  The three letters of Pranava teach us that we should dedicate all our actions to God! In his” Paramartha Sthuthi”  Swami Desican says, “ To protect us well, you have stood in the front in two places, in the Pranava, or Omkara and at the front of Arjuna's great chariot!” As Rama enters the forest he is in the front. Sita follows Him and is in the center. Lakshmana is behind her. This resembles the position of the Pranava always in the front! In the same way, Krishna, sitting in front and driving Arjuna's chariot is none other than this Pranava!

Valmiki describes Rama moving in Dandakaranya as Pranava moving about! Why does Pranava move about?  It is to destroy evil represented by Ravana and his train as well as Duryodhana and his company! These are the external enemies. What about the inner adversaries hiding themselves in us? These are called “Arishadvargas”! Ari means enemy. Shadvarga means band of six. They are very powerful but invisible to the mortal eye! They have man in their terrible grip and bring him untold miseries. The six enemies embedded in ourselves are Kama or Desire, Krodha or anger, Lobha or miserliness, Moha or attachment, Mada or Arrogance and Matsarya  or contempt! It is to destroy these inner enemies that Paramatma sits in the front!

Those who chant Pranava can reap a lot of benefits! But they have to desist from temptations and dresires! Omkaara or Pranava is the panacea for all the evils that accrue on account of desires or Kama and Lobha or miserliness! Mukkur Lakshmi Narasimhachar gives an illustration of a great scholar who was honored with gold and other presents! There were entry and exit points separately. He was tempted and wanted to get more gold and money from the king! There was no entry for him since he had already received the presents. But this powerful desire couldn’t be controlled. He hid the presents in a bag and climbed up on the wall to gain entry! All his erudition, character, were destroyed by this desire for more money and gold!

DASAVATARA STOTRA--JAYADEVA

Jayadeva, the famous Bengali poet glorifies the Divine Love between Radha and Madhava in his magnum opus Gita Govinda. This is a great Sringara kavya and every Ashtapadi is suffused with the romantic emotions of Radha for her Madhava and the feelings of Krishna for His beloved paramour Radha! Jayadeva begins his work with an invocation to Lord Vishnu and His ten avatars so that  Gita Govinda can overcome all obstacles! Gita Govinda is in beautiful Sanskrit language. I give below the meaning of the sthuthi in English for the benefit of readers who are not familiar with Sanskrit language.

1 Pralaya payodhi jale……….Kesava dhruta Meena sarira Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

O Krishna! Hare! During the Pralaya or deluge, all the seven seas flooded the entire universe almost drowning it! To arrest the drowning of the world and the Vedas, You took the incarnation of the Fish (Meena) easily and became boat like to save the world and the Vedas!

2 kshitirati vipulatare……Kesava dhruta kacchapa Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

Krishna! Be Victorious! You have saved the entire world from being drowned and descending down to Pathala loka by bearing it on Your back as the Tortoise (Tortoise). You have saved it once again!

3 Vasathi dasana sikhare dharanitava lagna……….Kesava dhruta Sukararupa Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

O Krishna! Be Victorious! When the terrible Hiranyaksha folded up the entire earth like a mat and tormented  all, You took the Avatar of the great Boar (Varaha), lifted up the earth by Your sharp horn and killed the cruel asura! The entire earth shone like the mark in the rising moon!

4 Tavakarakamale nakha madbhutasrungam………….Kesava dhruta Narahari Rupa Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

O Krishna! Be Victorious!  When you killed Hirayakasipu who tormented your child devotee, Prahlada, as the incarnation of  Narasimha, Your soft lotus hand with its sharp nail, it was like piercing the bee like body in an astonishing manner!

5 chalayasi vikramane Balimadbhuta Vamana………Kesava dhruta Vamanarupa Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

O Krishna!  As a brahmachari (celibate) Vamana  You begged Emperor Bali for three feet of earth! While measuring You assumed that Avatar of Trivikrama and covered all the three worlds! You placed your third step on the head of emperor Bali and sent him to the nether world!( Pathala). From the nail of your foot river Ganga originated and flowed on to the world! Thus  You purified all those who bathed in that sacred river!

6  kshatriya rudhiramaye jagadapagata papam……..Kesava dhruta Brugupatirupa Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

O Krishna! You incarnated as Parasurama, and rooted out the dynasty of Kings twenty one times! You created with their blood five lakes called Samanthaka” and ordained those who bathed in those lakes would be free from all sins! Be Victorious!

7 Vitarasi dikshurane dikpati kamaniyam……..Kesava dhruta Ramasarira Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

O Krishna! You took birth as Rama, in Raghu vamsa, acclaimed by great scholars! You clipped off the ten heads of Ravana and presented them as 'Bali'- offering to the ten guardians of ten directions!!

8 Vahasi vapushe visade vasanam jaladabham……..Kesava dhruta Haladhararupa Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

Krishna! You incarnated as Balaraama in the Yaduvamsa and dressed yourself with dark blue colored 'Pitambara,' which resembled the flight of the Yamuna out of the fear of your plough!

9 Nindasi yajnavidhe rahaha Sruthi jatam……….Kesava dhruta Buddha sareera Ja Jagadhisa Hare!

Krishna! You incarnated as Buddha and taught 'Ahimsa' --Non Violence to those men and Asuras in Kaliyuga, who under the pretext of Yajnas and rituals sacrificed animals! You proclaimed that Ahimsa is the best Dharma or righteous conduct to be put into practice!

10 Mleccha nivaha nidhanekalayasi karavalam……….Kesava dhruta Kalki Sareera Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

Krishna! In order to kill the evil minded that infested at the end of Kali Yuga to torment the world You wielded in your hand the sword  that looked like the comet come to destroy the world! Let Victory be to You!

11 Sri Jayadeva kaveridamudita mudaram………..Kesava dhruta dasavidharupa Jaya Jagadhisa Hare!

Krishna! Kesava! the embodiment of Ten Incarnations! Please  listen to  the songs of  Jayadeva, that are the best in the world and liberate one from the cycle of Samsara and offer happiness  to all!!!

SRI ABHIRAMI PANCHARATNAM

Tirukkadavur is a famous Siva kshetra in South India. The Lord there is called Amrita Ghateswara! He is also called as “ Kala Samhara Murthy”- one who killed Yama the God of Death! According to legend,  Markandeya, the son of sage Mrikandu had only a life span of sixteen years! The secret was revealed to him very late and the parents were in intense agony. Markandeya, a pious devotee of Lord Siva decided to change his fate by intense tapas and invoking the Lord. He sat in penance and lost himself in deep meditation. The God of Death sent his servants to get the life of young Markandeya. But they couldn’t near him because of the power of his penance! Yama grew angry and came in person to grab Markandeya! He threw his Pasa, the rope that takes the lives of all, on the lad!Out of fear, Markandeya embraced the Linga and prayed! The pasa thrown by Yama fell on the Linga and the Lord became furious and kicked the God of Death with His left foot and warned him severely for his misdeed! He ordered that Yama should never commit the indiscretion of approaching His devotees. The Lord blessed Markandeya with longevity and happiness! Yama begged the pardon of the Lord and departed! Thus the Lord at this Temple came to be called “ Kala samharamurthy”!

The Goddess at this great shrine is called “Abhirami”- the most beautiful! She is associated with an incredible miracle that she performed to save Her devotee and proclaim to the world his greatness and devotion. Abhirarama Bhattar was so devoted to the Goddess that others thought that he was mad! They couldn’t gauge his extreme ecstasy and devotion to Her! But He never bothered about what others thought about him. The news of Abhirama Bhattar, and his devotion reached the ears of the king! He wanted to see for himself and examine how far the news was true! The king came and wanted to test him. Abhirarama Bhattar was in deep meditation. The king asked him what day it will be the next day! The great devotee, in total Bliss in the thought and vision of Devi said it will be a full moon day! The king was shocked! The next day was actually a New moon day! The king thought that Abhirarama Bhattar was really mad.  He said that if he didn’t prove it the next day he would be killed! Abhirarama Bhattar felt that Devi should save him as she was responsible for what he had said! He prepared a platform with strings under which fire was raised! He started singing in praise of Devi and after every stanza he cut a string! People were aghast at this terrible decision. At a particular stage, Devi worked a miracle! She threw Her ear studs into the sky and lo, behold, the whole temple and vicinity was filled with the glow and coolness of the full moon! It was a full moon day as Abhirarama Bhattar said!! The king was dumbfounded! He realized the spiritual greatness of Abhirarama Bhattar and fell on his feet and apologized! The 100 stanzas composed are called Abhirami Andadi and are a precious treasure of classical Tamil! The following Stotra is a composition of mine on Devi Abhirami which I could write during my visit to The Temple a few years back. The Stotra in five Slokas, glorifies the attributes of Devi Abhirami as the consort of Lord Siva as Kala Samhara Murthy! The Stotra is in Sanskrit and set to the chandas (prosody) “Sardhula Vikridita”! I have not given the meaning of the Slokas for fear of making the blog too long!

KRISHNA KARNAMRUTA-SLOKA-50

Samsare Kim saram Kamsareccharana Kamala pari bhajanam

Jyothih kimandhakare yadandhkare ranusmaranam

Leela Shuka thinks about the previous incarnations of  Vishnu even as he perceives the different visions of Krishna in his mind!  Child bhaktha Prahlada had the rare fortune of the darshan of Lord Narasimha who presented Himself to kill Hirayakasipu and save the world! He is the Absolute Brahman that is glorified in all the Vedas and the Upanishads. His Avatar was terribly frightening to everyone including the Devas! The creator Brahma and Lord Siva and all the Devas including Goddess Lakshmi dare not approach Lord Narasimha! Leela Shuka  says that he is following and worshipping such Absolute Brahman!

“What is the essence of this samsara- this mortal existence? What is the best thing in our life?   What is the radiance in our ajnana or avidya or ignorance?  It is the meditation on the lotus feet of Sri Krishna!   It is also the namasmarana or repetition of the blessed name of Siva, the enemy of Andhakasura!” No life without these is worthy in this world.

According to Leela Sukha our mortal existence is useless without meditation on and worship of the delicate lotus feet of Krishna! Man is under the illusion of Maya and his life on Earth is directionless like a boat without a rudder! He is totally lost in the company of his wife, children, property and relatives!  He has no time to think of God or examine what his goal in life is! Attachment to mundane things undoes him. He is not worried about his purpose in life. He considers the real as unreal and the unreal as real! Modern life has come to a stage where man denies the very existence of God and sometimes considers himself as God! That is a  very dangerous trend in society! One of the devotees points out that everything happens according to one's Karma!  Nothing can stop it. But he prays that his devotion should always be fixed on His Lotus Feet! “ Twat padambhoruha yugagata nischala bhakthi rasthu!”

There is only one God! “Eko devaha Kesavo va Sivova!” Either it is Kesava or Vishnu or Siva! The Upanishads and the Vedas proclaim “ Ekam Eva adwitiyam Brahma”- Siva, Vishnu, and various other forms of God are only the manifestations of the Supreme Brahman! Those who consider them as different or superior or inferior are ignorant fools! Therefore Leela Shuka brings in Siva while describing the glorious leelas of Krishna. Lord Siva is called “ Andhakari” because he killed the asura Andhakasura!

It has been my fortune to bring to the notice of my viewers the great and wonderful composition of Leela Shuka in his KRISHNA KARNAMRUTA! The slokas are permeated with intense devotion, sringara rasa, and literary and poetic brilliance! The moment I came across this work, I felt that I should render the slokas in English and give a brief summary and notes so that the readers can understand the essence of the slokas! I have just chosen these fifty slokas at random for their excellence in poetic composition as well as rasa and devotion. We are able to feel the total devotion and dedication of the poet to the worship and meditation of his chosen deity Madanagopala!! I hope and trust that the blogs on KRISHNA KARNAMRUTA-SLOKAS have kindled interest in the readers for further reading.  I conclude my blogs on KRISHNA KARNAMRUTA-SLOKAS with this blog!

KRISHNA KARNAMRUTA-SLOKA-49

KRISHNA KARNAMRUTA-SLOKA-49

Godhuli dhusaritha komala kunthalagram

Govardhanoddhrana keli krutha prayasam

Gopijanasya kucha kumkuma mudrithangam

Govinda mindu vadanam saranam bhajamaha!

Leela sukha describes the wonderful form of his darling Lord Krishna! Once Radha lost herself in the thought of Krishna and began churning curd in an empty pot! She was not conscious of the pot without curd. How about Krishna?  Kishna too lost Himself in enjoying the rare sight of Radha churning curd! His eyes were glued at the movement of Radha’s chest and her breasts! Forgetting that it was a bull by His side, He started milking it! Leela Shukha portrays how Radha and Madhava were lost in their mutual Love!

In this beautiful sloka Leela Sukha brings out the exceptionally attractive form of Govinda! “It is evening time and all the cattle are returning home. Due to their movement dust is raised and wafts in the air. The tender ends of Krishna’s locks of hair are dusty and have a brown tinge! Krishna looks a  little tired because of lifting the Govardhana Hill miraculously! Due to His romance with the Gopikas, his entire body is smeared with vermillion marks from the breasts of Gopikas!! Krishna’s  face is amazingly beautiful like the full moon! He is Govinda  my protector and I worship Him!” exclaims Poet Leela Shuka.

It is a familiar sight in villages that is described by the poet. As the cattle return home, a lot of dust is raised by their movement and that fills the air. The dust, brown in hue, deposits itself on the tender tips of Krishna’ s hair! That adds on to the beauty of the already beautiful hair of Krishna ! Of the many sports or leelas performed by Krishna , lifting the Govardhanagiri is very important. The Gopalas and gopikas were amazed and spellbound at this miracle! It was an incredible feat! Krishna appeared to be slightly tired on account of lifting the Govardhanagiri! It was an illusion or maya!  How can the Paramatma be tired when he is the bearer of the burden of the entire universe? Krishna’s form is fully smeared by the vermillion marks due to His romance with Gopikas! It is poetic practice to compare any beautiful face to that of the full moon! Hence Krishna is called “ Induvadanam” “He is Govinda” because He brings happiness to cows and the entire world!

It was the practice to celebrate the festival for Indra, King of Devas! But Krishna suggested that it should be for the God of Nature! Accordingly, hectic preparations were made to celebrate Nature. On knowing this Indra grew angry and decided to teach a lesson to the Gopalas and Gopis. He immediately caused a tremendous rain and storm that flooded the entire village! Cattle, home, trees and everything was washed away and people appealed to Krishna for help! Krishna knew the evil intention of Indra. He was puffed up with pride and ego and lost his head without understanding the true nature of Krishna who was none other than Vishnu in His incarnation as Krishna!

Krishna directed all the gopalas and gopis to come together near the hill. He wanted them to collect all the herds of cattle near the hill. When that was done, Krishna, in His Divine grace and power lifted the Govardhanagiri with his little finger and held it like an umbrella covering the entire area and protecting all including the cattle! When Indra saw this miracle, he was crestfallen! His pride, ego, and arrogance vanished in a trice! He knew that Krishna was the Paramatma, the incarnation of Vishnu! He wanted to make amends for his misconduct in trying to harm the gopalas and gopis. He came down to Gokulam, fell at the feet of Krishna, and begged pardon for his misconduct! Krishna had His last laugh, admonished Indra for his arrogance and asked him to behave properly! All tha gopalas and gopis were astounded at what had  happened , praised Krishna for His love and compassion in saving them!!!
