KRISHNA KARNAMRUTA-SLOKA-49
Godhuli dhusaritha komala kunthalagram
Govardhanoddhrana keli krutha prayasam
Gopijanasya kucha kumkuma mudrithangam
Govinda mindu vadanam saranam bhajamaha!
Leela sukha describes the wonderful form of his darling Lord Krishna! Once Radha lost herself in the thought of Krishna and began churning curd in an empty pot! She was not conscious of the pot without curd. How about Krishna? Kishna too lost Himself in enjoying the rare sight of Radha churning curd! His eyes were glued at the movement of Radha’s chest and her breasts! Forgetting that it was a bull by His side, He started milking it! Leela Shukha portrays how Radha and Madhava were lost in their mutual Love!
In this beautiful sloka Leela Sukha brings out the exceptionally attractive form of Govinda! “It is evening time and all the cattle are returning home. Due to their movement dust is raised and wafts in the air. The tender ends of Krishna’s locks of hair are dusty and have a brown tinge! Krishna looks a little tired because of lifting the Govardhana Hill miraculously! Due to His romance with the Gopikas, his entire body is smeared with vermillion marks from the breasts of Gopikas!! Krishna’s face is amazingly beautiful like the full moon! He is Govinda my protector and I worship Him!” exclaims Poet Leela Shuka.
It is a familiar sight in villages that is described by the poet. As the cattle return home, a lot of dust is raised by their movement and that fills the air. The dust, brown in hue, deposits itself on the tender tips of Krishna’ s hair! That adds on to the beauty of the already beautiful hair of Krishna ! Of the many sports or leelas performed by Krishna , lifting the Govardhanagiri is very important. The Gopalas and gopikas were amazed and spellbound at this miracle! It was an incredible feat! Krishna appeared to be slightly tired on account of lifting the Govardhanagiri! It was an illusion or maya! How can the Paramatma be tired when he is the bearer of the burden of the entire universe? Krishna’s form is fully smeared by the vermillion marks due to His romance with Gopikas! It is poetic practice to compare any beautiful face to that of the full moon! Hence Krishna is called “ Induvadanam” “He is Govinda” because He brings happiness to cows and the entire world!
It was the practice to celebrate the festival for Indra, King of Devas! But Krishna suggested that it should be for the God of Nature! Accordingly, hectic preparations were made to celebrate Nature. On knowing this Indra grew angry and decided to teach a lesson to the Gopalas and Gopis. He immediately caused a tremendous rain and storm that flooded the entire village! Cattle, home, trees and everything was washed away and people appealed to Krishna for help! Krishna knew the evil intention of Indra. He was puffed up with pride and ego and lost his head without understanding the true nature of Krishna who was none other than Vishnu in His incarnation as Krishna!
Krishna directed all the gopalas and gopis to come together near the hill. He wanted them to collect all the herds of cattle near the hill. When that was done, Krishna, in His Divine grace and power lifted the Govardhanagiri with his little finger and held it like an umbrella covering the entire area and protecting all including the cattle! When Indra saw this miracle, he was crestfallen! His pride, ego, and arrogance vanished in a trice! He knew that Krishna was the Paramatma, the incarnation of Vishnu! He wanted to make amends for his misconduct in trying to harm the gopalas and gopis. He came down to Gokulam, fell at the feet of Krishna, and begged pardon for his misconduct! Krishna had His last laugh, admonished Indra for his arrogance and asked him to behave properly! All tha gopalas and gopis were astounded at what had happened , praised Krishna for His love and compassion in saving them!!!
