SRI SATHYA SAI TEACHINGS AND PHILOSOPHY 2

Swami  lays the greatest stress on the realization of one’s own self. This, he says, is called   "Brahma Vidya. The word ‘Veda ‘ means  knowledge of the self. Jnana  really  means self realization. Swami remarks,  “First look after yourself. Then you can go to help others.  Before helping others, find out who you are. Only then you can really help others. Like a wall clock that comes to a  standstill after the spring unwinds itself, so also absence of desires anew automatically brings one to a standstill. It ushers in what is called as’ atma sakshatkaram,- realization of self. Swami’s definition of  'saranagathi’ or total surrender to God is thought provoking! Says Swami, “ Saranagathi is not the surrender of one Jeeva or individual soul to another entity God. That is a wrong notion basically. It is the surrender of the  lower  “ I “ to the truthful “ I “ in a higher plane. The knowledge that there is only one Eternal Soul is the real Saranagathi”
Swami’s utterances breathe throughout the avatar’s qualities that very often astound us! Life is full  of  misery  says Swami. It is  foolish  to  expect  enjoyment or pleasure. God has created misery by his own volition in order  to draw  human beings into his fold! Swami asks sinners to not feel sorry.    "Open  up your heart to me with all your sins and drawbacks. I will not be shocked at your sins and withdraw. You may not be able to overcome them and reach me finally. On the other hand your sins and defects are not an obstacle for me. I will overcome all those and come to you. Then where is the question  of      “I” and  “you ?  Everything will become one. “  (Ra Ganapathy, Swami pp737)
Swami differentiates the  various  approaches  leading to Jnana. He aptly remarks, “ In order to reach the city of Jnana  from our tiny hamlet, first we take the foot path of karma, then the ordinary  kutcha  road of Bhakthi, and then finally reach the tar road of Jnana leading to the cosmopolitan city.” There is a total identity of consciousness and bliss for both the Jnani and the yogi. The supernal level of their bliss and consciousness is more important to them than anything else. The mere presence of Bhagawan  stimulates and  energizes  their bodies and consciousness. Swami has been a guide and philosopher  to many a yogi. He has helped them to realize themselves according to their deserving. He is the  bestower  of mantra,  yantra  and tantra  also. But above all he is the embodiment of prema  or love. Swami is sorry that man is not in a position to benefit by the illumination given by the Vedas and the sastras. Man is running after ephemeral enjoyments. This is like drawing water from a pot full of holes. On the point of oneness or’ advaita’  Swami  recommends  only ‘ Bhava advaita—spirit of oneness of everything but not Karma advaita—oneness in action. “   The truth of Tat  Twam  Asi must lead to Bhava advaitam not Karma advaitam, for when you come down  into the field of Karma duality is inevitable.’
To attain and discover one’s reality and divine peace one need not renounce the world and go far from the madding crowd. He need not turn an ascetic. Detachment or non attachment is a quality  that can be fostered at home or in the jungle, Bhagawan speaks of the importance of the human body. “ The body is the temple of God; He is the resident in the heart;  buddhi  or intelligence is the lamp lit in that altar; now every gust of wind that blows through the windows of the senses affects the flame of the lamp and dulls its light, threatening even to put it out. So close the windows; do not keep  them  open for direct attraction from objects.”  ( SSS  vol 5 pp76-77)
Swami refers to vitamin deficiency indicated by doctors in general and points out that entire humanity is  deficient  in one important vitamin viz  vitamin G. …” I will recommend the repetition of the name of God with accompanying contemplation of the glory and grace of God. That is vitamin G. That is the medicine;   regulated life and habits are two thirds of treatment while the medicine is just one third only.”   (  SSS vol 5 pp55)   (continued)

SRI SATHYA SAI TEACHINGS AND PHILOSOPHY 1

It is 90 years since the advent of Bhagawan Sri Sri Sathya Sai  Baba  on this sacred
soil of Bharath! Great change has taken place since he came to the world and departed! The whole world  knows  him  and follows at least a few principles  and messages he has taught! There is a steady, silent transformation that has taken place in many lives and society! It is pertinent to understand his teachings and philosophy that have worked miracles in society. Swami  has ,in his spiritual discourses , touched upon every aspect of human existence and shown the right path for us to follow and make our lives happy and worth living. I wish to share my thoughts on the Teachings and Philosophy of Bhagawan Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba in these blogs for the benefit of the readers.
In his innumerable spiritual discourses to varied assemblies of people Swami’s main  theme  is  to make Man realize his own identity with the Absolute! Enveloped by illusion or Maya he is unable to understand his own depth and divinity! Like a lion among the goats that has completely lost its identity and true nature, Man has identified himself with gross materialism! Man’s direction has to be diverted from the material to the spiritual level. He should progress from his selfishness to selflessness and think of the wellness of the entire universe! Swami’s main purpose is to turn the direction of the mighty and stupendous current of the human mind into proper channels! What is the purpose and aim of man?  Swami says, “  Man  has to become Divine, the Divine from which he has come. So he has to lessen his attachment to the world not by cutting himself off, but by being in it as an instrument in HIS hands; by subduing all tendencies towards egoism that raise their heads in him;    by  single minded attention to the dictates of God called Dharma.”(Satya  Sai Speaks, vol5 pp88-89)
One of the greatest philosophical truths is  explained  by  `Swami  in a simple and lucid manner. He says,     The  train in which you travel will be stationary. When another train passes on the parallel line, if you look out through the window it appears as if your train is on the move! If you look into the window, into the compartment where you sit you will know that it is at rest! Exactly in the same way when the mind looks out everything appears mobile, active and bubbling. That is the run of Maya or illusion. But the Self does not run. It remains where it is. You are seated in the same train. Divert the Mind that has gone out   into  yourself. You realize that you are in calm unruffled peace!”  Swami has asserted that  Bhakthi or love for God is itself advaita! The antonym for bhakthi is ‘vibhakthi’ meaning difference. Realizing two things is ‘Dwaita’ Two things merging into one is ‘advaita.
The authority and confidence with which Swami asserts himself and declares his Divinity and of all of us is really amazing!  Swami  says, “ Before one knows anything he should know himself first. It is only after finding out the real “ I” one can understand and know the other things and their true nature. How can one who does not know  himself  understand God or  Sai Baba?   Someone  expressed shock at my declaration that I am God. I told that man that I did not say I am alone God. I say that you are also God. The only difference is that I have realized  this  fact  in my actual experience. The others have not been able to do so.”How to get Moksha or salvation? In the sentence “  I want Mokaha” – Swami says that the first word  “I “ ahankara—ego must go first! Then the word  “ want”—desire  must also disappear from the statement. The remaining word will be ‘ mokaha’. Swami compares the mind of man to a fabric made of threads. The individual threads are the desires that  motivate  humanity.   Therefore  like a fabric that is nonexistent when the threads are removed individually, ‘ manas’ or mind also vanishes if desires are plucked away. Then there will be the space for atma..  (continued)

NARAYANA PRASNAM 9 Sadyojata Mantras

The significance of the FIVE faces of Parameswara and their meaning is described in the following:

Out of the five faces of Mahadeva the west face is described for attaining Jnana:
Mantra: sadyojatam prapadyami sadyojatayavai namonamaha bhave bhavenati bhave bhavasvamam bhavod bhavaya namaha
I surrender myself to Parameswara who has ”Sadyojata” as his ‘paschimavaktra’(western face), Again and again I offer my pranams to that form ‘sadyojata.’ O Parameswara of the form of sadyojata! do not  persuade me to take birth again and again. Egg me on to a state of birthlessness. My pranams to you who ferries human beings across theshoreless sea of samsara safely.
Mantra for the ‘uttaravaktra’-North facing face:
Vamadevaya namo jyeshtaya namas sreshtaya namo rudraya namah kalayanamah kalavikaranaya namo balavikaranaya namo balayanamo balapramathanaya nama ssarvabhutha damanaya namo manonmayaya namaha
I offer my pranams to the beautiful, radiant ‘uththaravaktra’of Parameswara which is the first born. Therefore it is called ‘jyeshta’, the best and the renowned. It is called ‘rudra’ as it becomes destructive and makes people weep during the deluge or ‘pralayakala’. It is named as ‘kala’ since it reduces the longevity o all creatures. It is called ‘kalavikarana’ as it creates different kinds of universe. It is called ‘balavikarana’ as It afflicts and destroys the power and strength of the demons. It is called ‘bala’ as it is thebase for all strength and power. It is called ‘balapramathana’ as  it can withdraw into itself all energy independently .As it can punish all creatures it is called’ sarvabhuthadamana’ Since it is all knowing, ‘sarvagna’ it is called ‘unmana’ My pranams to that face of Parameswara!
Mantra for ‘Dakshinavaktra’  south  facing face:
Aghorebhyotha ghorebhyo ghoraghora tarebhyaha sarvebhyas sarva sarvebhyo namasthe asthu rudra rupebhyaha
Parameswara’s face towards the south is called ‘aghora’ which is peaceful and calm. It is ‘sathwika‘ in nature. Other  idols are horrible to look at and ‘rajasika in nature. A few others are of ‘thamasa’ in nature and look the most horrible. O Parameswara! My pranams to your different faces, when they, during the period of destruction, afflict and trouble the entire universe!
Mantra for the face turned to the east:
That purushaya vidmahe mahadevaya dhimahi tanno rudrah prachodayath
East facing god is called ‘tathpurusha’ We learn about him through the upadesa  of the preceptor and  practice. Having known him thus, we meditate on him. Let that Rudra encourage us into his meditation.
Mantra for the upward face:
Isanas sarva vidyanam iswaras sarvabbhutanam brahmadhipathir brahmanodhipatir brahma sivo me  asthu sadasivom
The god situated in the upward face of Parameswara  is the ordainer of all vidyas (knowledge)and the elements(bhutas) He is ,besides, the protector of  the Vedas. He is also the lord of “Hiranyagarbha’ let him be peaceful and bring me all good things. In short, I become that Sadasiva.
Other mantra related to Lord Siva:  namo hiranya behave hiranyavarnaya hiranyarupaya hiranyapathayem bikapathaya umapataye pasupataye namonamaha
Pranams to Siva the pasupati. All beings from Brahma to the very ordinary stick are called ‘pasus’Their lord is pasupati. That Siva is also Umapati..When Parvati performed penance to get Siva as her husband, her mother called her  uma.U = o maiden; ma=avoid penance; The name came into vogue from that time onwards  Ambikapati  is Siva, Hiranyabahu is one with golden shoulders or golden parts of the body. Hiranyavarna is the father of the Vedas as rare as gold. Hiranyarupa is effulgent. Hiranyapati is the lord of ‘ navanidhis’—Nine Treasures.
Mantra for upasana:   rutagam satyam param  brahma  purusham Krishna pingalam urdhwaretam virupaksham viswarupayavai namonamaha
This Brahma is the best and the truth. This is not Hiranyagarbha. In the form of umamaheswara, Parabrahma showers grace on devotees. That form is of dark yellow color. The part of Maheswara is dark and the part of Uma is yellow. ‘Urdhwareta’is theone who by his yogic power gets the semen into the’ brahmarandhra’  above. One with a unique eye is called ‘virupaksha’ As he is the cause for the entire  universe  I offer my pranams to him.
Mantra for good rain and the god of rain to remove troubles and difficulties:  apovai dagam sarvam visvabhutan yapaha  prana vaapaha pasava aponnamapo mrutamapas samradapo viradapas swaradapas chandagam syapo jyotigamsh yapo yajugam shyapas satyamapas sarvadevata apo bhurbhuvas suvar apaom
The entire universe and all animate and inanimate objects that we see are water in essence!  This  is because water becomes semen and is the root cause for the formation of the bodies of all beings. So all bodies are water only. The pranas in the body are also water. Water quenches the thirst of all beings So pranas  are also water. Chandogyopanishad says “apomayah pranonapi batovichchetsyate”   Water  forms  into milk. So all cattle  are  water. Anna, ie   rice, wheat and other grains are cultivated with water. So they are also water. Hiranyagarbha, Virat Purusha,Iswara,Chandas like Gayathri, Adityamantras,Truth,  Indra and other devas and bhurbhuvassuvarlokas  belong to Water. In short water is the creation of  paramatma
Mantra:
Tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhana murvaruka miva bandhananmrthyormukshiyamamrutath
‘Sugandhi’ is one whose fragrance is felt at a great distance like the smell of jasmine and other flowers.  One who increases robustness in day to day life Is  ‘pushtivardhana’ .One with three eyes is ‘Tryambaka’ We worship such a Purusha with our good deeds. Please detach us from death, like how you separate the cucumber from it’s stalk!  Do not detach me from Moksha or salvation!

NARAYANA PRASNAM 8

Mantra:  santapayati swamdeha mapadatalamasthakaha thasyamadhye vahnisikha aniyordhwa vyavastitaha
That fire, within the body, based on all the organs from head to feet, is creating  heat all over the body. Because of this heat we realize that there is fire inside our body. From within the fire diffused all over the body, a subtle flame reaches out through the Sushumna nadi up to ‘brahmarandhra’(midpoint of the skull) upward.
Mantra:  nilathoyada madhyastad widullekheva bhaswwara nivarasukavattanvi pitabhaswat yanupama
That flame flashes like the lightning in the dark rain bearing clouds. It is so delicate and subtle as the thorn at the end of the grain called ‘nivara’ It is yellow in colour, radiant and comparable to extremely  subtle objects.

Mantra:  thasyas sikhaya madhye paramatma vyavasthitaha sa  brahma sasivas saharis sendras soksharah paramaswarat

Centrally  placed in that subtle flame described above is Paramatma, the original cause for this entire universe. Though for the purpose of upasana, the all pervading Maheswara  is allotted an insignificant place, he is not in any way unimportant! He is the Lord of all the Vedas. He is the four faced Brahma. He is the spouse of Parvati, Siva; husband of Lakshmi, Vishnu; and Indra, the spouse of Sachidevi. As he is the root cause for this universe and the master of maya (illusion) he is the indweller and is called AKSHARA.

The Bhagavadgita says “ksharas sarvani bhutani kutas thokshara uchyate”The word ‘parama’ means one bereft of maya or illusion. He is the form of pure awareness (chidrupa). He is self effulgent and independent. Therefore he is called as “swarat”

We have to meditate on paramatma described first as “sahasrasirshamdevam”and other adjectives with sentences like “padmakosa prathikasam” as prescribed.

21     Paramaya namaha; Pranams to Siva who is the best and the greatest of all people and things in all the worlds
22     Paramalingaya namaha; pa+rama+linga; pa=protector of the universe;rama=the blissful in the world of moksha; As the knower of all (sarvagna)he knows every thing within that has merged. My pranams to such paramalinga.
23     Etath somasya suryasya sarvalingaggam sthapayati panimantram pavitram; According to the above mantra ,the three varnas, brahmana, Kshatriya, and vaisyas should consecrate  lingas of gold ,silver and other chemicals. This linga is the symbol of surya,Chandra and all devas as well as the cause for  everyone. Vedic  mantras  formed themselves into hands and feet.’ pani’is the symbol  for the body which is the Veda. It shall purify the worst sinners as one recites or thinks about it.
