TAITTIRYA UPANISHAD
BRAHMAVALLI
FIRST
ANUVAKA
SANTHI
PAATA
Mantra: Sahana
vavathu sahanau bhunakthu sahaviryam
karavavahai……..
This Santhi mantra is
intended for the continuity of “Nirguna Brahma Upadesa” without any
impediments. Eternal and final emancipation or moksha is possible only after
realizing “ Atma Vidya”. In order that such “ Brahma Vidya” should continue unaffected
without any obstacles, this santhi paata is recited.
Meaning: Let the Parabrahma look after and protect us
both---the teacher and the taught. Let us both be clever and smart in relation
to knowledge. Let whatever both of us have learnt deserve proper meaning and
jnana. Let us not be mutually revengeful or hateful. If, at the time of
learning, by accident, there is any hatred between the teacher and the student,
such hatred should be removed. It is for that purpose the phrase “ ma
vidvishavai” is recited.
The word “ santhi” is recited thrice so that
the adhyatmika, adibhauthika, and adi deivika tapatrayas are calmed down or
pacified.
The word “ veerya”
indicates the smartness, imagination and presence of mind in grasping and
assimilation of what the teacher instructs.
